In the spirit of keeping that reputation, the U of M is on the verge of a groundbreaking development. Take this quote from their website:

“Computer, data, and information science are quickly becoming the backbone of systems that connect society. Creating a space where top scholars in computing and information can come together to help solve some of the greatest challenges in modern medicine, transportation, smart infrastructure, and more, will help the University of Michigan remain at the forefront of advances in computer science and information.”

The university is crafting the Leinweber Computer Science and Information Building, a cutting-edge facility spanning 163,000 square feet. This architectural marvel will house the School of Information and offer expansion room for the Computer Science and Engineering Division of Michigan Engineering, uniting these two entities under one roof for the first time. The structure is set to boast active learning classrooms, adaptable research labs, student services areas, offices, and an array of collaborative spaces. Anticipated completion is set for Summer 2025.

At the heart of this contribution lies the enhancement of heating and cooling systems in the Leinweber Computer Science and Information Building.

Welcome to Celina Elementary School, an idyllic, lake-side elementary school nestled in Celina, Ohio. With an enthusiastic community of 600 students and an array of programs and activities, this school champions academic brilliance, artistic flair, athletic prowess, and social connectivity.

A relentless pursuit of creating the most conducive learning environment for both students and staff pays off (read more here). That is why the Celina school district decided to completely renovate existing PK-6 building & add an all-new grade 7-12 junior high. In this, the school decided to modernize its HVAC system by partnering with Griswold Controls.

Celina Elementary School has undertaken an exciting $127 million dollar venture. Their existing building has undergone an exciting transformation – one that places the utmost importance on the HVAC system. Not only that, but they have added an 81,000 sq. ft. in educational space that will serve as the home of PK-3 students. The goal? To create a learning haven that’s comfortable, conducive, and healthy for students and staff alike.

In the spirit of this vision, Griswold Controls has been chosen to play a pivotal role. Their Custom AHU CPPs, CPP-2BIS, and Flanged QuickSet have been selected to enhance the air handling units. Description:

Neal Hall is located on Lake Land Junior College Campus in Mattoon, Illinois. It houses a nursing lab, 2-D and 3-D art labs, a music classroom, a biology lab, a greenhouse, an earth science lab and general education classroom. This building is integral to helping the school serve a wide range of educational needs.  

The nursing lab in Neal Hall is a particularly noteworthy feature of the building. The lab provides students with hands-on experience in a simulated clinical setting, allowing them to practice their skills and gain confidence before entering the workforce. The lab is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and resources to support student learning.  

All of that was put on hold as a fire broke out in the building in 2020. The fire did most of its damage to the roof of the building but common areas, music, and art classrooms were also damaged. Interestingly, the fire itself was not the culprit for most of the damage. Smoke and water were deemed the main factors in the damage to the building. 

Overall, Neal Hall is an important part of Lake Land College’s mission to provide high-quality education to students in the east-central Illinois region. The building’s facilities and resources support student learning across many different disciplines, helping students achieve their academic and career goals. Getting Neal Hall back to 100% operating capacity is of utmost importance. 

Project Description:

The art labs in Neal Hall are also noteworthy. The 2-D art lab provides students with access to a wide range of materials and tools for drawing, painting, printmaking, and other forms of artistic expression. The 3-D art lab provides students with access to equipment for sculpture, ceramics, and other forms of three-dimensional art. 

Could you imagine a 3-D art lab or a nursing lab without proper heating, ventilation, and air conditioning? 

The QuickSet CPP forged brass manual balance valve with brass venturi insert and graduated memory stop wouldn’t be as good as it is without a valve housing that includes a field repairable dual Teflon and EPDM o-ring seal stem. The QuickSet manual balance valves are set to design flowrate in the field by the balancing contractor. The valves help control the heating and cooling flowrate to each zone in the building optimizing the customer’s comfort.

If that’s not impressive enough, the student to teacher ratio has dropped from 38:1 to 19:1 over the last 5 years.

The school is clearly making strides to improve as any good organization would, and one of those ways is through the quality of their HVAC systems. The forged brass automatic flow control valve assembly of the coil piping package includes an integrated isolation ball valve and stainless-steel flow control cartridge to maintain constant flow in spite of pressure changes. This cartridge can be removed for inspection or conveniently replaced without disturbing piping connections. Continuing that thread of convenience, the valve housing includes field repairable dual

Teflon and EPDM O-ring seal stem, with a nickel plated ball. Valves includes one fixed end connection and one union connection including a union nut and EPDM O-ring. Finally, the valve body has two ports with (1) Pressure/Temperature Test Valves, and (1) combination Pressure/Temperature Test Valves and manual air vent.

Description:

90 years ago, the world back then is almost unrecognizable today. Speakeasies and homelessness were rife in America due to prohibition and the Great Depression respectively, Pluto was just discovered, the Chrysler building opened, and gas was about 10 cents. Focus on the heart of Waterloo, IA, and you’ll find that Lowell Elementary was established. Located right off Highway 218 and Williston Ave, Lowell Elementary School had 352 enrolled students in 2015.

After more than 90 years of service to the community and a partially collapsed roof, it was time for an update. Fast forward to today, and Lowell Elementary is near completion after almost 2 years. With a total cost estimated at $24.21 million dollars, one should expect a wonderfully designed and constructed building.

Project Description:

Built on the same site as the original, the new building will be bigger and support more students while still finding ways to incorporate the old building, like keeping the unique triangular layout. Because of this, the designers had a huge dilemma when taking this project on. They wanted this building to be the best that it could be, even though the site is smaller and oddly shaped when compared to other schools built at a similar time. Furthermore, they wanted to incorporate the latest and greatest so that Lowell Elementary would not resemble any of the schools built in the last 20 years. This applies not only to the architecture but the HVAC as well.

The engineers took these requests and chose 4 efficient, durable, and cost-effective HVAC equipment from the top drawer: CPP-IRIS, Flanged QuickSet, Uni-Flange, and Isolator R valves. All of this equipment works well for different reasons.

1. Griswold Coil Piping Packages are pre-assembled piping systems that save time and reduce cost. We offer fully assembled coil hookups that can be readily connected to your system with as little as 4 connections. No more field assembled components.
2. Manual Balance Valves include brass venturi inserts for flow measurement and graduated memory stops for flow setting. Valves are available with multiple end connection options including a union end connections.
3. Automatic Flow Limiting Valves are found in many different applications. Specifically, Isolator R valves are available with a wide range of flows and PSID ranges and are the perfect choice for tight spaces. The stainless steel flow limiting cartridge has a spring-loaded cup that dynamically absorbs pressure fluctuations resulting from changing system conditions due to varying heating/cooling loads. These fluctuations in pressure, within a given pressure differential control range, do not change the flow through the valve, therefore the flow is controlled to within +/- 5% of the designed flow.
