Heat may be your friend on a tropical vacation but in a computer data center, heat is your number one enemy! Griswold Controls valves have been used in cooling computer data centers all across the country to help the HVAC system remove that computer-crippling heat. They also have year-round cooling requirements due to the high volume of computer equipment like servers generating tremendous amounts of heat; the load can be six times the cooling requirement of a traditional office building. Unlike most HVAC systems where comfort is the primary objective for design, engineers designing to cool computer data centers have additional details to consider that impact the life and performance of the computer equipment. Therefore it’s critical that these systems operate with consistent high performance in the most cost-efficient method possible.
Valves for Data Centers - Griswold Controls
Reduce Energy to Cool Buildings
For over 55 years, Griswold Controls has improved the efficiency of hydronic HVAC equipment (coils, AHU, terminal units, etc) in HVAC Systems by controlling the flow rate of hot or cold water to the coils. Griswold Controls designed the first balance valve on the market, our automatic flow limiting cartridge controls the flow regardless of pressure changes in the system; which guarantees the coil performs at the engineer’s design Delta T at all times. Besides installing the flow limiting valves on CRAC units to control the chilled water, these valves have also been installed on cooling coils mounted directly on the servers themselves. In the early 2000s, Griswold Controls was the first manufacturer to market pressure-independent valves to Computer Data Centers. Controlling the climate is a precise job and a pressure-independent valve controls the flow at all times, even in reduced load conditions. Griswold Controls’ latest product line, the EPIC System, directly controls the Delta T of the coil, reducing energy from over-pumping while maintaining adequate cooling.
Griswold Controls - Solutions for Data Centers
Guaranteed Cooling
Automatic flow limiting valves, pressure independent valves, and the EPIC System are all automatic and don’t require any balancing at the job site, so the flow rate or Delta T at the coil meets the engineer’s design specifications from the moment the system is started up. They continue to provide design flow or design Delta T even as the building is occupied and the loads change, guaranteeing the correct cooling at all times.

    Facility Description

Have you ever been surfing on eBay, looking for something interesting? How about sending or receiving money using PayPal? Bought tickets using StubHub? These are all functions that the eBay Utah Data Center server is performing today.

This data center is the world’s first to use Bloom Energy Savers™ as its main power source instead of relying on the grid. The facility cools IT equipment with plate heat exchangers mounted directly to the racks and uses outside air with evaporative cooling towers instead of industrial chillers.

The facility is supplied by Griswold Controls’ Pressure Independent MVP valves, available in sizes 2-1/2″ to 10″ and flows from 40 GPM to 1220 GPM, providing precise pressure-independent flow control.

    Project Description

Pressure Independent MVP valves reduce energy costs and improve occupant comfort by precisely controlling the flow to each coil. This reduces over- and under-flow, minimizes actuator cycling, increases available plant capacity, and simplifies system design.

By accurately controlling water flow, the valves also reduce the need for additional pumping, minimize capital expenditures, and maximize energy efficiency.

Facebook Data Center – New Mexico

Liquid Cooling for the Future of AI

      Location Los Lunas, New Mexico
      Date of Completion 2021
      Representative Massey Johnson Associates
Griswold Controls Products Used Isolator U, Isolator S

      Facility Description

$1 billion dollars and 4 years later, the 510,000 sq ft (47,000 sq m) Facebook data center in Los Lunas, New Mexico has been completed. The campus has been fitted with the latest OCP compute, storage, and networking technologies which translates to a very quick data center.

Powered mostly by renewable energy, this data center created more than 300 construction jobs and 50 permanent jobs. Even the governor of New Mexico had something to say:

“Facebook is a stellar, cutting-edge, high-tech company, and it’s an honor to welcome them to New Mexico. Making our state more competitive for jobs and new investment is critical to growing our private sector and diversifying our economy.”

Who knows, maybe your profile is stored there…

      Project Description

If your profile is stored there, just know it is in capable, air-conditioned hands. This project has been fitted with a custom coil piping package including Isolator U and Isolator S valves installed all over the building. Griswold Controls has expanded our offering of these components to include larger accessories components like flanges, flange adapters, and tees to build larger air handling unit packages so that in the future, Facebook can decide to expand and further custom tailor the valves to suit their HVAC needs. Griswold Controls also offers accessories like combination air vent and pressure-temperature test valves, automatic air vents, pressure-temperature test valves, hoses, and drain valves.
