GM Lordstown Electric Battery Plant
GM Lordstown Electric Battery Plant
High-performance HVAC flow balancing supporting one of the largest electric vehicle battery manufacturing facilities in the United States.

Facility Description
What do Grand Central Station, Ellis Island, and the grounds of the U.S. Capitol all have in common? They are each smaller than the massive 2.8-million-square-foot GM Electric Battery Plant built in Lordstown, Ohio.
General Motors partnered with LG to construct this extraordinary facility. With a $2.3 billion investment, over 1,100 new jobs created, and more than 14,000 hours of development work, the plant is designed to produce batteries for GM’s expanding electric vehicle lineup.
The facility is capable of producing approximately 30 GWh (gigawatt hours) of battery capacity annually, with the potential for future expansion. For comparison, the fictional DeLorean from Back to the Future required 1.21 gigawatts of power—about 1,622,637 horsepower.
As electric vehicles become increasingly common, facilities like this will play a critical role in shaping the future of transportation. GM’s Ultium lithium-ion battery technology uses 70% less cobalt and replaces it with recyclable aluminum, helping ensure long-term sustainability and scalability.
Project Description
With millions of square feet of manufacturing space and highly advanced production technology, the facility requires a dependable HVAC system capable of maintaining stable conditions across the entire building.
To support this need, Griswold Controls QuickSet manual balance valves were implemented to provide precise system flow balancing and reliable long-term performance.
Products Used
QuickSet Manual Balance Valves
QuickSet manual balance valves feature brass venturi inserts for accurate flow measurement and graduated memory stops for precise flow adjustment. Multiple end connection options are available, including union connections, allowing for flexible installation.
No straight pipe runs are required for normal operation. When paired with a butterfly valve for shutoff, the 2-1/2″ to 20″ Metering Station becomes a fully functional QuickSet Manual Balance Valve with memory stop for accurate system balancing.
Valves with accessory ports are also available to accommodate additional monitoring and system accessories.
Recommended Applications
- Where a simple solution is needed for proportional or static balanced systems with constant speed pumping.
- Where flow balancing, flow metering, and shut-off are desirable in a single valve.
- Where optimum system flow balance is required while using minimum horsepower.
