Facility Description

Construction of the new Interdisciplinary Science and Technology Building 7 at Arizona State University, Tempe Campus, is underway. Sustainability is the focus of the facility design. Within the facility, several buildings will reside, such as the University’s Global Institute of Sustainability, the Institute of Human Origins, a conference center with an expansive 450 seat auditorium, classrooms, public outreach, and exhibit spaces. The project boasts labs for biological sciences, engineering, and life sciences, including a dry lab space for computing, cybersecurity, engineering design, fabrication, and robotics. This facility aims to be LEED Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certified.

Project Description

With a design focus on maintaining an ecological balance, the Arizona State University ISTB-7 project estimates cost around $192M. The new addition is approximately 281,000 GSF and anticipates a completion date in 2021. This project offers new sustainable design solutions, climate-responsiveness, and regenerative technologies. This new building is estimated to produce enough carbon, energy, water, and waste to achieve triple net-zero performance.

Among the technologies are materials that include ASU’s scientific research and integrated-carbon. The goal is to convert it to nutrients for durable materials and enriched soil. The atrium biome filters waste air, and a wetlands landscape recycles water using natural, bio-based methods. Rainwater is collected, and sunshades help cool the interior of the building. The Sewage is treated and then recycled via low-energy, bio-based processes and then turned into greywater. To save and produce energy, air currents, evapotranspiration, and photovoltaics are used. Ultimately this new facility produces and collects more energy and water than it uses.
