National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific
National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific
Reliable Irrigation Pressure Control for a Historic Memorial Landscape
Project Description
Located within Honolulu's historic Punchbowl Crater, the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific spans approximately 112 acres and is one of the nation's most recognized military memorial sites. The crater, known as Pūowaina, is commonly called "Punchbowl" because of its bowl-shaped volcanic formation.
As a sacred place of remembrance, the cemetery's grounds are visited by families, veterans, and the public throughout the year. Maintaining the grounds with care is an important part of showing respect for those who are honored at the site. Reliable irrigation infrastructure helps keep the cemetery's extensive landscaping healthy and well cared for.
The DWS-PRV combines pressure regulation with solenoid-operated control, allowing irrigation zones to operate automatically while maintaining controlled downstream pressure. Its slow-to-open and slow-to-close operation helps reduce pressure surges and water hammer.
Challenges and Solutions
-
Maintaining Controlled Irrigation Across a Significant Landscape
Large irrigation systems require reliable control over when and where water is delivered. The DWS-PRV combines solenoid operation with downstream pressure regulation to provide controlled water delivery while maintaining consistent pressure.
-
Reducing Pressure Surges and Water Hammer
Rapid valve opening or closure can create pressure surges that place unnecessary stress on irrigation infrastructure. The DWS-PRV's slow-to-open and slow-to-shut operation helps reduce water hammer and pressure fluctuations.
-
Supporting Reliable Operation in Irrigation Water Conditions
Irrigation systems may encounter debris and other foreign material. The DWS-PRV features a mechanically self-cleaning and self-purging internal control port that helps prevent accumulation without screens or filters.
-
Simplifying Maintenance
Internally ported, corrosion-resistant metallic components are serviceable from the top of the valve, helping simplify maintenance when service is required.
Benefits and Outcomes
-
Automated Irrigation Control
Remote solenoid operation allows irrigation zones to operate automatically while maintaining controlled downstream conditions.
-
Consistent Pressure Regulation
The adjustable pressure regulating pilot can be set from 5 to 100 PSI and is designed to maintain downstream pressure within 5% of its setting.
-
Reduced Water Hammer
Slow-to-open and slow-to-shut operation helps minimize pressure surges associated with rapid changes in flow.
-
Self-Cleaning Performance
The mechanically self-cleaning and self-purging internal control port helps maintain reliable operation without screens or filters.
-
Simplified Serviceability
Internally ported components and top-access serviceability help simplify maintenance.
Products Used
DWS-PRV Series Remote Control Pressure Regulating Valve
The Griswold Controls DWS-PRV Series is a brass-bodied, forward-flowing valve that combines remote solenoid operation with downstream pressure regulation for irrigation applications.
The valve features a guided diaphragm assembly and a mechanically self-cleaning, self-purging internal control port. Its slow-to-open and slow-to-shut operation helps reduce pressure surges and water hammer, helping protect irrigation piping, joints, couplings, and sprinkler components.
The adjustable pressure regulating pilot provides a setting range of 5 to 100 PSI, while the pilot bypass allows for manual operation and continued downstream pressure regulation.
