Description:
For a community that could fill 2/3rds of Lambeau Field, a new era is right around the corner. Wesleyan University makes up 4,320 people in that community, but they are bringing a huge wave of new additions to Middletown.
What the new Public Affairs Center, 44 and 56 Hamlin Street, and being carbon neutral by 2035 all have in common is bringing in the new era at Wesleyan University. One of the faces of this is the ambitious new Science Building. Scheduled for completion in 2026, this state-of-the-art building will serve as a hub for innovation and learning, providing students and faculty with cutting-edge resources and a collaborative environment.
Wesleyan University’s new, 190,000 square foot science building will contain 48 labs, vivarium, greenhouse, outdoor spaces, and an advanced instrumentation lab spread across 4 floors of science. Going carbon neutral in 11 years requires support from every facet of operations. That is why the new building, designed by Payette Architects, will use only a third of the energy per square foot that the current labs take up.
By providing a modern and efficient facility for scientific research and education, the building will attract top-tier faculty and students, enhancing the university’s reputation as a leading institution for scientific research and education. The building will also provide a collaborative environment for students and faculty, important for any higher education university.
Challenges and Solutions:
One of the primary challenges in constructing the New Science Building was integrating advanced HVAC systems into a complex architectural design and meeting the rigorous environmental guidelines. The solution involved using Griswold Controls’ Isolator B, Isolator S, and union products, known for their reliability and efficiency. These components ensure optimal performance and ease of maintenance, crucial for a facility that will house sensitive scientific equipment.
Because the Wesleyan University new science building is a landmark project apart of the university going carbon neutral by 2035, there needs to be an incredible system to support that.
By incorporating advanced HVAC solutions from Griswold Controls, the project ensures a sustainable, efficient, and comfortable environment for students and faculty.
Benefits and Outcomes:
The building’s completion in 2026 will mark a new era of innovation and collaboration at Wesleyan University, solidifying its position as a leader in scientific research and education. The impact of this project, along with other ongoing construction efforts, will transform the campus and provide a modern, efficient, and sustainable environment for the entire Wesleyan community.
This project was made possible via the Isolator S. Streamlined installation, sustainabilty, and efficiency are at the center of what the Isolator S valve provides. This valve is a combination of a ball valve, union and strainer, all in one housing leading to incredibly easy install.
The new science building, and those projects associated with it, will also have a positive impact on the local community. By attracting top-tier faculty and students, the community of Middletown is sure to be improved in education and beyond.
Products Used:
The Isolator B is a critical component in this HVAC system, providing reliable isolation and control to ensure efficient operation and easy maintenance. Its robust design makes it particularly suitable for high-demand environments like this New Science Building at Wesleyan University.
The Isolator S is renowned for reducing labor costs and ensuring that the system can be easily serviced when needed. Its use in the New Science Building ensures that the building’s HVAC systems operate at peak efficiency, providing a consistent and comfortable environment for students and faculty.
The precision of these valves allows for enhanced comfort while also contributing to the building’s overall energy efficiency, aligning with the project’s sustainability goals.
